Marsh Properties appears to be moving forward on its planned redevelopment of a shopping center and nearby apartment buildings in Charlotte’s Sedgefield neighborhood.
This week, fencing went up around the site of the estimated $190 million project, located along South Boulevard between Poindexter Drive and Elmhurst Road. Construction equipment sits at the ready in the parking lot of the now-vacant shopping center, once home to a Healthy Home Market Store, and windows and other materials have been removed from the empty apartments.
The Charlotte Business Journal reported last year that Harris Teeter will anchor the multi-use project, which will include additional retail, for-rent and for-sale housing units, park areas and, possibly, an office component.
“I can’t overstate what an important piece of property it is for us,” Jamie McLawhorn, president of Marsh, told the CBJ at the time. He noted the land was once the Marsh family farm.
The firm is working with Aston Properties to develop the retail piece of the project.
According to a website set up to inform neighborhood residents about the redevelopment, that phase is expected to be complete late next year or in early 2017.
The Sedgefield redevelopment is just the latest construction project to get underway in the South End area, which has seen a flood of apartments and stores spring up along the light-rail line in recent years. A Pepsi bottling center across South Boulevard from the Marsh site also is being marketed for redevelopment.
